used (`df -hi`) on the single partition /dev/sda1
The box is BIOS (not efi) so no EFI partition is used, so /boot is on

in exploring the issue as I wrote the initial report.. I opened
Desktop.Settings (right click background with aim of selecting another
wallpaper)
I'm now getting lots of black flashes on the box... which look like
graphics issues with the nvidia card.. (nouveau related?) I'd
