I can confirm that the workaround from "Toby (to-mueller87) wrote on
2012-08-09" worked for me as well (Bug #1041915 that I filed is a duplicate of
this one) .
I did this:
cp 40-libsane.rules 40-libsane.rules-2012-08-26-for-scanner-breaks-apt
sudo rm 40-libsane.rules

I eventually noticed apt-index-watcher taking lots of CPU and am very
glad I was able to fix it by running the following command:
sudo apt-get install debtags

I think this bug can be closed. I'm running Kubuntu 6.06 and XDMCP works
fine with KDM. I think this bug only existed in the KDE 3.4.x versions,
all 3.5.x KDE versions should fix this problem.
