Interesting - I think this must not be a kernel problem. While trying to
do the bisection testing, I accidentally removed some needed drivers, so
I just reinstalled 13.10.
When I originally installed 13.10 (from the same USB drive), the
trackpad was definitely working, but now it is not. I think
I was unable to boot using the 3.12 rc6 kernel.

Also, I noticed that this only happens when I select Safely remove

I haven't seen this again since upgrading to 11.10. IMO, it's a tough

I believe this is a bug with the Tile Tabs extension - disabling Tile
Tabs fixed the bug for me.

I use the sudo aptitude full-upgrade command from a terminal window to
install updates and this has worked without issue. I would think that once
Karmic is released that it will be available just like Jaunty was when it
was released, but I'm not a Linux expert...

This is all well and good, but for a new commer no one seems too know

It's not fixed in Jaunty; I've received emails that it's fixed in Karmic.
My workaround is to use Aptitude in Konsole and do a full upgrade in Jaunty.
