You can switch off scaling without leaving full-screen mode by moving
the cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the vinagre full-screen
control panel. Then click on the magnifying glass icon.
Best of all worlds! Thanks again.

This is a problem which also occurs with UVUNTU 9.04. After trying several
suggested solutions, I finally have installed version 7.04 (not recommended due
to it no longer being supported), and have no such problems accessing USB

It may have something to do with what Windows wrote to the drive prior to the
"Safely Disconnect" routine.
Try attaching it to the Windows PC again, accessing it, and then just pulling
the USB connector without using the "Safely Disconnect" function in Windows.
That may eliminate the problem.
I have had a similar problem. My external USB drive absolutely cannot be loaded
in UBUNTU version 8.04 and version 9.04.
In fact, version 9.04 does not even DETECT the external USB hard drive.
In order to have access to my USB external hard drive, I have to use
version 7.04.

That is OK for someone well acquainted with Linux/UBUNTU, but how do I
find out the correct "device" term for an external USB hard drive that
is not mounted or even detected?
This same problem has been occurring with Windows XP and with Windows

Aha ... fixed it. Updated my motherboard BIOS. Now its rock solid on

The board is an ASUS M3A78-EM. Old (bad) bios was 1206. New (good)

idea which one actually fixed it.

In addition to my last comment, you may need to set the correct
permissions after installing the font. In a console type:
sudo chmod 655 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/symbol.ttf [press Enter]
Does anyone know, can we get this font included in the MS core TrueType fonts
package to solve this probl
Hi all,
This problem is easily fixed. It is due to the fact that MathType uses
the "Symbol" font which is not installed by default in Ubuntu. You need
to install this font (attached to this comment).
To do so, download the font to your home directory, open a console and
type:
sudo cp symbol.ttf
FYI I'm seeing exactly the same effect.
A fresh install of either 8.10 or 9.04 (AMD64 desktop). Then install
flgrx using ubuntu restricted drivers manager and I get this problem.
Loading the CPU cleans all the flickering off the screen. It's a dual
core processor, only one core needs to be

As an experiment I tried to use the vmware driver and got a similar "no
devices found" error. I've never actually tried the vmware driver
before, so this may just be a coincidence (has it ever worked ?).
