Binary package hint: vino
Having remote desktop as an option in the default installation creates
a security risk.
It invites new users to enable it, not understanding the security
implications. They then end up with unwanted connections to their
machine. A quick look around
I'm getting this bug, or something very similar. The display is
unstable, and sometimes it show the left edge of the image in the middle
of the screen. It can, at times, flash back and forth between the
displaced and normal images.
Grub still works.

I've had problems with wicd being flaky in connecting to my hidden WPA2
network. I sort of fixed it by writing a template that scanned for the
hidden ESSID and then used the passphrase that was entered in the
Properties dialogue.
This evening I decided to upgrade the passphrase from 30 to 63
The package installed normally a few hours ago.
It appears that the problem has been solved, at least for Lucid.

instead. I've run the laptop for several hours, including with desktop

I use aptitude (the ncurses interface) extensively when creating a
minimal install from a command-line version. I especially like the no
recommends option, which allows me to pick and choose components when
building up a system. apt-get requires me to know the exact name of a
package ahead of
I was using Tim Gardner's patched kernel successfully. Of course,
there's been a kernel update recently (two of them, actually) and
therefore Tim's kernel has been replaced with a standard Ubuntu version
- with the error in it.
For the moment, I've gone back to using a mainline kernel:
I've run a couple of tests with a standard grub boot line, i.e. removed
i915.modeset=0
Uptime was 4.5 hours and 6 hours, with no problems.
Seems like the bug has been fixed. :)

I was playing with Debian Stable yesterday and I noticed that grub2 in
Lucid would not use UUIDs for its menu entries.
Lucid also uses /dev/sdX notation. Since Debian uses /dev/hdX for IDE
drives, the entries are unusable and I had to create a custom
workaround.
The problem arises with Hardy

need a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, using the vesa driver. You can use the

xforcevesa in the boot line, but I couldn't find it from the front page of the

Upgraded to Lucid.Wine not running previously-installed programs
winecfg in a terminal brings up the configuration application. I notice
that the history is appearing in the drives tag i.e. various USB
sticks that have been run at different times. There are no error
messages in the terminal.
If I try to run wine winword.exe (MS word 2000), I get the message:

the packages libsoup-2.2, libsyncml0 and opensync-plugin-syncml and install

I actually did a clean install, not an upgrade, but I am using the same
/home partition and thus the same .wine directory. Wine recognises that

From time to time, when using i915.modeset=0 option, I find that the
display becomes pixellated. That is, the lettering and objects are still
all there, but instead of being solid black, they will display as partly
black and partly coloured.
Logging out and in again
The problem appears to be fixed for me. I installed by clicking on the
Install Ubuntu... icon.
Note that a) I did not resize any partitions (reused an existing one)
and b) I did not have any settings to migrate.

I have been getting this error while attempting the install:
An error occurred while migrating data. More details may be found in
/var/log/syslog. The installation will continue, but some or all of the
documents and settings you requested may not have been transferred to
the installed system.
I'm having the same or similar problem with 10.04 RC. It's happening
with .ogv, .mp4 and .wmv files.
If I double-click on a movie file to play it, the screen is completely
black. If I right-click on the picture area, I get a picture for a
fraction of a second. If I click on one of the menus, the

I tried the same thing, and the installation completed successfully. I
was able to boot into it, too.

I've tested the fully-updated install with the latest mainline kernel,
2.6.34-020634rc5-i386 (should have thought of this sooner).
The problem shows no signs of occurring while using this kernel, even
after several reboots.
