I just uninstalled totem from Jaunty because VLC usually gives me more
control, what a surprise when I found the VLC plugin gives me NO

Looks to me like EasyTag does a reload or refresh of the entire list of files
after saving a change to one file. This explains why the time-per-file grows
with the number of files in the list.

Yeah, I'd like to see that horizontal mirroring is turned on by default
(or configurable). Though it would be less useful for other video
streams like TV tuners. It's not a big deal to press Effects -> Mirror
