I am experiencing the same thing. I'm using Compiz Fusion (I believe)
and Nvidia proprietary drivers (I don't know the version).

I just reproduced something like this (April 18, 3:00AM UTC).
My screen went darker, and I entered in my password (after running
update-manager). After successfully entering my password, the screen
stayed dark except for the update manager and an applet or two.
The Applications/Places/System and
I tried it again on a whim the next time I turned my computer on, and it
worked flawlessly... so no, I can't. :)

I agree that the first attempt to upgrade was a network issue... I'm not
so sure about the second one. The window became completely
unresponsive.. and no applications (like GNOME Calculator or Terminal)
would start up. I would get the "Starting Terminal..." notification,
but then it would go away
Is this the same bug as 68291? Someone reported that it didn't work in
Herd 4.

When I typed "startx" from the root shell (in "recovery mode", it made
it all the way to the desktop before locking up.
I typed in Xorg -configure, and that generated a
