Good News! The sound now works with Ubuntu 8.04 (this was for the Gateway laptop NX270S). Originally, it did not work with 7.04. It still did not work when I used update manager to update to version 7.10. However, the upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 8.04 did the trick. Thanks to whomever was resp

No luck. The command sudo modprobe -r snd_hda_intel && sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=m6 didn't work from the console, because it reported snd_hda_intel as "in use". So I ran 'init 1' to get to text mode (and hopefully stop any programs using snd_hda_intel), ran the above command, then and ra
