Good News! The sound now works with Ubuntu 8.04 (this was for the
Gateway laptop NX270S).
Originally, it did not work with 7.04. It still did not work when I
used update manager to update to version 7.10. However, the upgrade to
the latest Ubuntu 8.04 did the trick.

I installed the lastest version of ALSA. I used the following configure command
./configure --with-debug=detect --with-cards=hda-intel

I installed 1.0.14rc3, and set the snd-hda-intel module's model parameter to
each of the following

I've upgraded from Edgy to Feisty, and then tried to set the model option to
snd-hda-intel by configuring /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and rebooting.
Following your recommendations, I've tried the following configurations
options snd-hda-intel model=ref
options snd-hda-intel mode
No luck.
The command
sudo modprobe -r snd_hda_intel && sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=m6
didn't work from the console, because it reported snd_hda_intel as "in use".
So I ran 'init 1' to get to text mode (and hopefully stop any programs
using snd_hda_intel), ran the above command, then and ra
