I had exactly the same experience as Kyle Gordon-- unspecified error, followed by the upgrade tool being verry slow. But, after a reboot the system worked perfectly, so whatever the dpkg error, it must not have been severe. Once rebooting into Feisty I did a manual apt-get clean and deleted
