I finally reinstalled from scratch and the problem went away (previous
install was a dist-upgrade.) Feel free to close if no one else can
confirm this bug.

On my Dell Latitude D630, running Gutsy, it would be great to run this
command automatically on dock/undock:
xrandr --output VGA --auto
Tailing /var/log/messages, I see ACPI dock/undock events, so the only
thing missing seems to be the dock/undock script suppport.

The device information for my camera, a Canon PowerShot S60 was missing
from udev, so the device was inaccessible. I had to add this line to
/etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto.rules:

I had exactly the same experience as Kyle Gordon-- unspecified error,
followed by the upgrade tool being verry slow. But, after a reboot
the system worked perfectly, so whatever the dpkg error, it must not
have been severe.
Once rebooting into Feisty I did a manual apt-get clean and deleted
