I went back and took a closer look. Indeed my wife had set a custom
background. I set it to use the theme default and the blur/gradient
problem went away. However, a new problem showed. When I made the
change, I got a rectangle that was not painted in the panel - see new
screen-shot - of lower
I have the same left mouse click stop working problem. However, this
only occurs on my laptop that has a touch pad. Left clicking does not
stop working on the touch pad by itself (no external mouse attached) and
in tandem. Even when the external mouse looses its click, the touch pad
does not.
Allow ripping and playing - just have the ripped data used to play
instead of the actual audio from the disk. In other words, play what
you are ripping. Rip it, play it, encode it, write it all at the same
time.

Logging out then back in fixes the problem. The problem seems only to
occur on the first log in after a boot up.

Is there an easier way to log out? With the screen corruption, I can
not select the log out button so have to kill GDM then start it from the
command line.

The Authenticate dialog hangs for a long time with no indication that
anything is happening. The dialog is misleading as it pops up after I

need to authenticate.
