The exact same thing happens to me. You can fix it by removing ~/.tilda
or running tilda with the -C option. Before I ran with -C and got
Segmentation Fault, this is my stacktrace:

I'm on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4727 and no matter what I do, I can't
even get anything to play out of the headphones! I've tried
model=toshiba, model=lenovo, auto, 3stack, 3stack-6ch... I know this
isn't related to this report, but did anyone else watching this bug have
that problem? I'm on

While in a GNOME sessions (F7) and I try to switch to a TTY, my screen
turns black and it goes right back to the GNOME session. If I try to
switch to the TTY again soon after it had failed, it goes there no
problem. It should not switch back to GNOME after I switch to a TTY
Reproduce it by going to System Preferences Keyboard. Add a new layout, and
attempt to change the default layout.
Yes this happens for all users.

It is impossible to change the default keyboard layout in System
Preferences Keyboard. The radio buttons are locked. There is no Unlock
button. If you run the program as root, it edits the keyboard settings
for root. I am on Ubuntu
When I upgraded to 8.04 a while ago, it was fixed. :P Forgot to close
this.
