Using 1680x945 here and wishing for this feature myself.
Ideally there would be a way to retrieve the current resolution (probably
tricky if several displays of different resolution are active), but I'm not
sure if the effort is justified.

@anthonycoyle: Have you tried to replace the default network manager with wicd
(simply install the wicd package using a package manager like synaptic or
aptitude)?

Thank you both.
At the time of writing the report the only known workaround would've
restricted the system to 3GB of usable RAM. Something which renders a
notebook with 6GB of RAM fairly useless. But today's
I replaced Wicd with the default network manager again and now switching
between networks (including eth0 - wlan0) is possible without any
freezereboot again.
Seems like that was the combination which originally caused what I assume was a
kernel panic.

a) The change only delayed the problem (got another crash about a minute ago)
and
b) Network manager somehow managed to lose the passphrase to the wireless
network to which it was successfully connected for several minutes.

The first time after waking the system from suspended state. Wireless
connection couldn't be re-established, the system froze after a few
seconds and rebooted.
After that reboot I noticed that the system had connected to the wireless
hotspot on the 2nd
