I replaced Wicd with the default network manager again and now switching between networks (including eth0 - wlan0) is possible without any freezereboot again. Seems like that was the combination which originally caused what I assume was a kernel panic. Originally I had made the switch to Wicd

Seems like I spoke too soon. a) The change only delayed the problem (got another crash about a minute ago) and b) Network manager somehow managed to lose the passphrase to the wireless network to which it was successfully connected for several minutes. All these problems started with the
