For the time being my method of fixing it is to disable the
notifications applet. It's not optimal but keeps kwin from crashing at

As mentioned in a comment to bug #855287, this problem can be do do a
missing /etc/timezone file. Try reinstall tzdata, or reconfiguring it

I can confirm that installing wine with aptitude on Ubuntu 12.10 does
not work right out (asks me to make decisions about packages (gettext)
that I don't feel comfortable making.)
But using just plain apt

Even when successfully installed xserver-xorg-lts-quantal (e.g. by default
within fresh install from ubuntu 12.04.2 media) if trying to install the

will REMOVE the quantal xserver and the old one from precise gets
Sorry i forgot to mention in comment #2 that i first tried to update the amd64
variant of the xorg-server from kubuntu-precise 12.04.1 to the quantal backport
before (update of quantal-kernel was no problem). But it resulted in a
DEFECTIVE xserver installation with only black screen after

don't know the implementation details but you could perhaps ping the

version conflict:
