Hi! I have now realized that the problem was the complexity of alsamixer and kmix. Some settings cannot be set from the kmix but must be set using the text-based alsamixer. When I unmuted the IEC958 in alsamixer and fiddled with the volumes for a while I managed to get the sound working properly.
