OK. At the risk of sounding stupid, but this might help someone else, so

Kernel upgrade happened from 2.6.31-22-generic to 2.6.31-22.61.
This upgrade came through update manager.

There are two types of crashes.
The first one, due to monitoring, is not a crash in the apport sense.
Audacity reports a crash when started the next time.
The second one is rare and hard to reproduce. It has happened only twice
with me. It is a crash in the apport sense, the one I initially

You are right. This bug is not reproducible in the apport/coredump
sense. But Audacity indeed does report a crash when I start it next time
if I had closed it earlier with a project open and the recording monitor
enabled.
