I narrowed down on this. It is only if the application is maximized that
it can't be moved in the pager. I think attempting to move a maximized
window should a) restore it, b) move it as normal.

I had identical symptoms on a Dell Dimension 2350 - slow boot, no
display. I disabled usplash by removing quiet splash from the boot
options, and the boot sped up tremendously.
It's an intel architecture, so it may be a different bug - but since the

I can force the issue by forcing it to the edge of each screen one after
the other:

With respect, please don't be too hasty to close bugs. KPilot is now
completely non-functional, as I cannot connect. Every time I plug in,
the USB device is different; even if I've set permissions on it before,
these are blown away. KPilot doesn't work as root either. I consistently
get I/O errors.
BTW, this is pretty serious, as it has led to file system corruption on
both machines, since I'd had to shut down via the power button. It led
to my laptop being completely unbootable (to the extent that I had to
reinstall) and my desktop dropped a partition from ext3 to ext2, as the

OK, um, help?
Before when I installed, I was able to get hdc to come up by adding a
line to the fstab. Now, I can't. fstab -l /deb/hdc lists no partitions.
Is there a way to restore the partition table without wiping the data on
the disk? Or should I take it to a data restoration place?

err, above, when I said "fstab -l /dev/hdc" I meant "fdisk -l /deb/hdc".
I tried mounting it also - "sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/hdc /ed" but it gave
me an error message:

FWIW, I switched to Twinview and (obviously) the problem hasn't
reoccurred. I had an aversion to Twinview in the past (based on
instability last time I tried it, years ago, I think) but it's stable
(and, bonus, gives me full KDE4 bling, which xinerama was somehow
blocking.)

In Kubuntu / gutsy, I can no longer change themes or turn kdm themes
off. If I change the settings in kcontrol, in administrator mode, the
changes are lost after I hit apply. This is unfortunate, as kubuntu
doesn't seem to have a graphic designer
