like to examine a strange somehow similar behaviour in cupsd with sssd.
(Which - shame on me - I haven't reported yet):

we noticed this problem on several of our machines, so I would like to

I have a (relatively) clean install of Ubuntu 20.04 (no upgrade), which
is joined to a Windows AD-domain via sssd, but currently used off site
with cached credentials.

It's probably compiled-in, and comes from the region face setup. By
default, the region face background is set to gtk_selection_bg_color,
which must correspond to light grey.
It's possible to change this from the X interface in Options =>

apt it shows NOT installed, yet, there it is.

Ok the other machine I was having this issue with is a kvm-qemu virtual machine
acting as a mail server. On it I remove xorg-xserver-video* and with those
removed it no longer hangs. So it seems somehow xserver graphics/video are
involved. My workstation is using intel internal graphics and
I removed a bunch of stuff I did not really need, game servers, xorg-
xserver drivers for hardware I did not have, kvm-qemu stuff that I have
not used on this machine since last July, tor, and after getting rid of
a bunch of cruft, it does reboot properly so now I have to figure out
which

This error was annoying. Something triggered it and the logs were not clear on
what.
I'm was file corruption somewhere. I had some old files in
/home/myusername/.cache/blueman*
I removed those and logged out and in. No more crash but it may not last.

Yesterday, I tried to listen to a podcast to see if that bug would
affect an audio only program. Here again, the podcast jammed after 10

There is not currently a graphical method of determining if a system is
subscribed to [Extended Security Maintenance](https://ubuntu.com/security/esm)
updates. This is resolved by adding some [new
k8s blah blah blah, but such a critical thing has been around for more
than six years. I can imagine how it can undermine the credibility of
Linux for newcomers...
