upgrade from dapper to edgy = nfs not working. Often users get
permissions denied, or stale nfs file, in their own (automounted)
homedirs. Makes edgy useless as nfs server.

I tried again, to see what I could see about those two processes. I
attached to each of them with strace and saw no activity. The kdm
process seemed to be hung up on a read. Peeked at the xorg log, saw
nothing interesting. I was just about to switch back to gdm when bam, I
got an nvidia splash

That is a different issue. Actually, all the error messages posted
after the bug was marked "fix released" are different than the one
originally reported, making them different bugs. And of those, two
separate bugs are represented (two very different error messages). This
bug was correctly marke
I switched to GDM as a workaround, which works fine. Seems to be a kdm-
specific bug.

Another interesting observation: if I create a new user and run gnome-
art as that user, it works fine (that is, it behaves just as it does on
the machine where it doesn't segfault).

This works on one machine and not another. Both machines are running
amd64 kubuntu. On the machine where it doesn't segfault, I get this in
the console when the download dialog appears (instead of the segfault):
(gnome-art:6132): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Failed to open session DBUS
connection: U
This only happened to me on the second download (while trying to confirm
a separate bug, #60258 ) but it's confirmed.
