Er, oops, apologies for the nonsensical bug. It was something else that
was causing my problem, which I now have figured out. However, there is
a good reason I thought this was a bug. Compare the following two
pages:

Agreed. This randomly changed from karmic, where it is correct.
Installing eclipse is now annoying because it installs an arbitrary jre
I do not use. In karmic and jaunty the dependency is openjdk-6-jre-

turning on and off to save power. A workaround to disable this is to change

It seems like the pop doesn't only come from the pc speaker, but also
from the real speaker. For instance, if I have headphones plugged in,
the pop comes from the headphones as well.

I hit this too. I removed existing openoffice.org-filter-binfilter to
work around it instead.
The thing that really confuses me about this bug is the time at which it
appears. This appears as soon as you start the upgrade, which is

The broken symlink is only part of the story. Here is what I wrote on
the duplicate's (358848) page:
Go to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and list the files. You will find that
libtotem-basic-plugin.so is a broken symbolic link, to
/usr/lib/totem/default/libtotem-basic-plugin.so. If you go to firefox
I've compared the output of about:plugins on intrepid, where totem-
mozilla works, and on jaunty, which has this bug. The missing formats
are ogg, ogv, anx, axa, axv, mpg, mpeg, mpe, wav, mp3, nsv, flv.
Now, if you create the link to libtotem-cone-plugin.so that wasn't there
originally, it adds
