Regarding #21, I just did fixparts repair on one of the disks I have and
I'm still getting the palimpsest error and it still won't auto mount.
Also remember that I at least can automount the same disk on a different
ubuntu natty system just fine. So it seems likely that there is some
sort of drive
Regarding #22, "sudo grub-install /dev/sda" did not fix my problem,
still seeing it.

FYI, I have a U160 and I've finally gotten it working using the
"i915.lvds_use_ssc=0" undocumented kernel boot argument. This makes it
work for me under a number of different 2.6.39 kernels. Thanks to Chris
Wilson for adding this, here's hoping google leads others to this
option.

ok- said yes. New files were updated and I was instructed to restart.

Hardware specific kernel issues are never fixed as I can observe from several
cases, with video adapters being the only exception.

I ended up reinstalling Ubuntu from the 11.04 beta, rather than updating from
10.10 as I initially did, and I see a lot fewer bugs/crashes. This particular
bug is one I've not experienced since the new install, as well as the bug which
causes software-center to crash upon open.

I was updating from version 8.04 which I presumed would give me the newer
version. I don't want to download a new distro as I am worried that a new
installation will fry my data when/if hard drives are reformatted.I
don't have enough off line storage to back up my data completely either.

and the problem has disappeared!

Natty to downgrade to the old version of udisks as was the case in
Lucid.
