This is happening to me too. It's HUGELY distracting when trying to use
2, 3, or more terminal windows.
I have 3x U2711 monitors hooked up via display port to a R9 Fury, so
hardware doesn't seem to be a commonality.

Hi - this is quite an old bug now. Qjackctl has moved on to 0.4.2 in
Ubuntu's latest releases now.
I have no problems using Qjackctl in Ubuntu Studio (which uses a jack-
sink to connect with Pulse Audio for desktop sounds). Then there is no
need to use ALSA directly.

performance audio and video work.
This is a new feature we have wanted to start working on for a long
time, and we would like to get it out
To clarify my testbed, I can reliably reproduce this issue by rebooting
a laptop with Ubuntu Desktop 16.10 installed. Neither restarting the
network-manager service, nor reconnecting to the same network using the
nm-applet reproduce the issue, but rebooting does.

As the config file previously in the us-lightdm-theme source package is
moved to us-default-settings, and us-default-settings is seeded for
Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Studio users will not notice anything after us-
lightdm-theme is removed during the apt-get dist-upgrade.

I was able to stop the loop by blacklisting the nvidia modules and restarting
the system.
I added /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kill.conf, deliberately chose to appear after
the existing nvivida conf files in the same directory (not sure if that's
essential):
blacklist nvidia_367
blacklist nvidia_367_
chine
(VirtualBox). I then booted off the disk so it was running for real,
and accepted the offered nvidia drivers. Finally, I shutdown and
restarted in the VM. That is the context for the loop. The VM has no
nvidia hardware, and so obviously there is no reason for the driver to
load.

Yakkety and Xenial have already been released. Packages do not get
updated after release. Specific critcal bugs can be fixed through the
Stable Release Updates (SRU) process.
However, in the case of libav, this package was removed from Ubuntu
after the vivid release, in favour of ffmpeg. Perhaps y
backported as well:

logs won't have much useful in it because the crash is really early on
boot.
