Happy 2010 everyone! Frustrations arising from this bug shouldn't
deter/dampen the mood. :)
I guess it's only another 4 months to wait before Lucid LTS, so I'm ok
to wait while using WICD.
Just to share, I've experienced the system hang twice so far while using the
two linux-backports-modules-*
Urgh, a new kernel can sometimes take very long to get into the official Ubuntu
repositories.
Although I wonder if the problem with AR928X adapters not being able to conduct
regular wireless activity and scanning for new networks concurrently is a
driver issue or the adapter's inherent fault.
I've since switched to WICD which has been flawless for the last 18 hours.
To be fair, the problems might be due to NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant.
NM keeps wpa_supplicant constantly scanning, while WICD stops scanning once a
connection has been established.
If NM has an option to stop scanning
What I've noticed after about a day's usage was that there were no more
messages in dmesg, but there would still be periods of zero activity
over wireless (about 10-15 seconds every few minutes).
So I wouldn't say a real fix has been released.
Edit: I just found that it correlates with
Have just installed linux-backport-modules-karmic-generic and
linux-backport-modules-wireless-karmic-generic, on kernel 2.6.31-16-generic

Machine's a DV5Z-1000 with Atheros AR928X adapter.
Will leave the machine on with Transmission
For me, I had to do this to get it fixed:
1. Edit-Preference-Privacy-Junk
-- check When I mark messages as junk:
-- select Move them to the account's Junk folder
-- check Mark messages determined to be Junk as read
2. Edit-Account Settings-Local Folders-Junk Settings
-- check Move new junk

Binary package hint: libpcap0.8
On a Hardy 8.04 server, darkstat with libpcap0.8 performed excellently

On a Jaunty 9.04 server, darkstat with libpcap0.8 (1.0.0-1) was extremely slow

Thanks Karoly and Harry,
Your prompt responses are much appreciated.
I've put in an urgent maintenance slot and things seem to be running
fine as well.
Perhaps any new issues should have their own bug report filed.
This bug should be considered closed since it now boots with an official
