Have you installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 10.10?
This problem happens on am3-machine (Radeon 4670) - and laptop x100e (Radeon
3200).
There is nothing indicating anything hardware related. (X simply does not
restart. CTRL+ALT+F1 works)

1) If I close with X in upper right corner - jockey-kde will crash
2) The first item is selected but not set current. Activate will then 'lock up'
the dialog.
I might later find some duplicates on theses issues.

In Bug 288642 I thought that I had tried sun-java5-plugin with
sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-plugin
and
sudo apt-get install sun-java5-plugin
However it still ran the java6-plugin. (I have realized now)

sudo apt-get remove
I do not think that this bug can be closed yet.
With Kubuntu 8.10 (with all updates) I can not switch user.
When I click 'start new session' on the 'Warning - New Session' dialog I get a
freeze.
(If I use vesa I successful get a new session - however when I return to my
previous the graphics is

Beside I agree with Adam that the importance of this bug should be set to high.

It seems to be the start of the xserver. I get a sound when KDE starts - but my
screen remains black.

Having the same problem sometimes.
I logon in commandline - runs startx and shutdown.
Afterwards I can normally boot into kdm (kubuntu 7.10 - fully upgraded) - but
sometimes the problem comes back.
Have tried many of the above things without permanent succes.
I do NOT have a SATA-disk ! - but
I still have this problem in Kubuntu 7.10.
However I noticed that it mostly happens when minimizeing or closing a
full-screen window.

The problem is just completely away. Just not easy to reproduce.
On shutdown splash is allways there - but on boot it is only there sometimes.
Monitor is not idle - the screen is just black. (The menu-button works).
Just before X starts everything gets red for about 0,25 second then red

No the shutdown doesn't allways work either.
I just suspected sudo usplash to fix something (It allways works in
x), but I cannot say anything for sure now. For the moment I had 3 boots
in a row with splash (and 2/3 shutdowns.)
I will try to figure out more .
