Major update! After deleting the firmware files and messing around,
pressing 'cancel' on the window that asked for the password again and
then running dhclient, my wireless card works!

When it says that, it also still pops up the window that asks me to put
in the network key. I press okay on that window and the process repeats.
I know I'm not connected because I check ipconfig and I'm not assigned

I have same exact issue, neither keyboard nor mouse work. If I ssh in
and kill X, then I can use the keyboard fine in console.
This is on a dell latitude c640 laptop.

at all! It goes from grub2 to messages to blank screen to gdm.

It seems that this is only present on intel chips. I have an nvidia and
an ati box here and here the boot screen is displayed on boot.
