Disconnect VPN (both now greyed out)
options in network manager menu available at the top of the display.
I confirm this is in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, not a more recent release.

in my tracks from going to Ubuntu 14.04

I need to stay on 12.04 LTS (!)
FWIW I found that restarting the machine and reinserting the usb stick, gave me
a normally functional usb with nautilus.
Another fix was to install an alternative file manager Thunar, and make use of
this while the problem occurred.

The axis labels seem appropriate to the speed value apparently seen by system
monitor. It is th eapparent speed value seen by system monitor which is too
large. To keep th einitial report simple, I did not mention the similar
apparent inaccuracy in system monitor indication of upload

one could say that (under VPN conditions) the System Monitor is
indicating about a factor of 2 overspeed. A bit broad brush, an d need

disfunctional. I must be able to get the hidden launcher back in view in an

In Unity it may have less value than previously and it is supposed to be active

I notice that in Sound Settings, the Hardware tab seems to show only a
limited range od Profile options which do not include 'Analogue stereo
Output', which - for me - usualy works. the profile offers Analogue

Following install of beta 2 from the alternate cd, the ubuntu still would not
boot, unless the kernel param string
b43.blacklist=yes
was used, and then booting completed to normal desktop.

An aside comment for information:
I have now set up a second machine with Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 updated, and on the
second machine, the dash focus does work correctly, which means that I can now
be very sure that on the problem machine in the bug here, it does have the bug,
and the problem is
1) If I hit super, (only) and hold it, then within a very short time
(guess 200 milliseconds, or quarter of a second), the launcher icons
are shown with black numerals on them.
2) If I hit and hold super and tap 'a' within the above quarter
second, nothing changes on the display, no applications
I have checked, and it is not bug 948515. I do not see the applications lens at
all, ever.

Thanks however, at the time of the, problem since firefox would not even start
up, I could not see a way of using the normal methods of reporting. No process
id for example. and such as
ubuntu-bug firefox
simply crashed out immediately still again offering only the firefox crash
report.
I installed ubuntu 12.04 alpha 1 and then did all updates - although the
process was labelled as a partial upgrade. all updates installed.
Not long following this I routinely started update manager, and it gave
this problem. As things stand, I cannot update the rolling alpha 1 via
the update
I hav enow used terminal to
sudo apt-get update
and then sudo apt-get upgrade.
This found 5 updates which were installed ok.
I immediately then tried update manager and it then worked normally with no
problem.
