there is the openchrome project which provides opensource-drivers for
the via chipsets (http://www.openchrome.org/). they know about these
problems but developement seems quite slow over there.

wants to remove texlive, although latter is an optional dependency. only
aptitude lets one keep texlive, while reporting an error.

i'm getting the same with aptitude, whereas with synaptic, there is no error,
and i can install texlive with kile (if i actively choose texlive before
choosing kile). so is there a bug in synaptic too, or is it just what synaptic
should behave like?

Result: The customized panel is gone. There's only a tiny
placeholder on a new panel in the top left corner.
'Workaround': rebuild the panel from scratch.

Seems like trying a pc98 disklabel is the cause.
After changing that to msdos using parted,
and then starting all over, installation worked.
