There is a bug report #67620 already in launchpad and also the trident driver.

Thanks for your suggestion, Peter, seems this procedure requires a
kernel upgrade to 2.6.20. I will do that when time permits or else i
will do this after upgrading to Fiesty next month.

Scott,
Yes, i was able to change the xorg.conf on an installed system. You are right,
this problem is still with the LiveCD and we cant change this file.
Think the Vesa driver has to be fixed as it was working fine with Dapper.

I was able to make progress in this black screen issue by changing my driver
from vesa to trident. My Dell Inspiron 5160 has XGI VOLARI XP5 video card and
vesa was working fine with Dapper. But in Edgy, i shifted to Trident driver and
included the modeline from /var/log/Xorg.0.log in the /etc/X1
Dapper is working fine (with vesa driver) in my Dell Inspiron 5160 and i was
multi-booting it with XP and Vista. I removed Vista to install Edgy using

Both never worked with my laptop, failing with "unable to determine bios type"
error.
