I was able to make progress in this black screen issue by changing my driver from vesa to trident. My Dell Inspiron 5160 has XGI VOLARI XP5 video card and vesa was working fine with Dapper. But in Edgy, i shifted to Trident driver and included the modeline from /var/log/Xorg.0.log in the /etc/X1
