Yes, reboot=b helps. Thanks.
BTW: doing it the way that Mark Favas pointed out is not the optimal
solution - because it doesn't survive running the update-grub script.
I've found that the more bulletproof way would be to add it in the
commented out (!) kopt line, and run update-grub. Like this:
I guess it's no longer incomplete? (correct me if I'm wrong)

Seems that the bug was caused by using (apparently incompatible) MS
Tahoma font copied to the font directory by me. Deleting the font has
fixed the problem completely.
Although I doubt anyone would try using Tahoma in Linux, the problem may
potentially appear with other broken fonts, so maybe
Seems to work well in the final FF.

I'm no longer a primary user of that machine, so it may take a couple of
days before I'll be able to test it properly.
Sorry for sowing confusion - I've been moving to another country and
settling in June/July and had no wireless network at home at all, and
then I forgot about the whole thing.
Update: Feisty desktop liveCD works correctly. So I guess it's some
problem with my HD install. Still, it would be better if it worked
correctly.

Another update, after further testing/several reboots:
- halt works, both with HD install and liveCD (I was wrong in my initial
description!)
- reboot doesn't work, neither with HD nor liveCD of Feisty; it hangs the
machine to the point of having to hold the power button pressed for 10 seconds
gutsy-desktop liveCD iso downloaded on 2007-08-15 behaves similarly
(hangs after ejecting the CD), with addition of messed up shutdown
screen - random color patterns instead of normal ubuntu logo screen.

Happens here too. I think the author's intention was to make the window
topmost and a tool window at the same time - but he forgot about the
topmost thing so the window lurks near the bottom of Z-order on a
crowded desktop. The only way to get to it is minimizing other windows
one by one.
Looks pretty similar. I will burn the 7.10 beta live CD and check if it
still happens.
But if it's indeed fixed in Gutsy, can the fix be backported to 7.04?
