hledger tutorial giving wrong results

I am running Ubuntu 12.04
I am trying to learn hledger from the hledger tutorial
http://hledger.org/step-by-step.html
But I do not get the same results as in that tutorial.
So the learning process is buggy/difficult/impossible.
I checked - is this version of hledger up
SOLUTION
I have (half) solved the Ubuntu Software Center problem with
>sudo update-software-center
Now this works:
>sudo software-center
But this still blocks:

Using the final release of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, I've encountered the same
error with a Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT graphics card and 2 monitors
connected via DVI: the system freezes during startup of X server. If one
of the monitors was disconnected or connected via VGA, the system would
boot up normally.
.. I've tested this with i386 and AMD64 arch, same results.

Hi,
I'm having similar problems with a Nvidia 9600 GT on a AMD64 X2
platform, but its not related to any updates: The final version of
Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy" is not able to boot beyond the boot screen (Ubuntu-
Logo + status bar) if MORE THAN ONE monitor is connected. Both Live-CD
and installed system
