Well, 'cat' prints, but it does not wake up the fan, so I'm afraid it's
not worth opening a bug report.

I found a workaround:cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature
When you paste this into a terminal, it will display various
temperatures and will "remind" the fan to turn on.

Acer Aspire One running Ubuntu 9.10, fan does not start after using
suspend, machine crashes; fan then does not start at boot-up, making
machine unbootable! (crashes through heat exhaustion before boot-up
completes).
I never use Hibernate as it takes so long to resume that the benefit
isn't worth

Me too. I have HP's Compaq 6715s, and the fan sometimes doesn't work
after resume from hibernation. For me, s2ram is ok. (Actually, s2ram
cures it.)

Hello. I am running Ubuntu Hardy with kernel 2.6.27.2 and the issue remains. I
have Toshiba Satellite A205. I haven't tried with 2.6.26. kernel I went
from 2.6.24-21 to 2.6.27.2. Hope this helps. I haven't searched the bug lists

Bump.
I'm now running on Hardy, and the problem still exists. With tne 2.6.24
kernel, the sleep works flawlessly, but hibernation is still the suck.
One thing I've noticed is that when I bring it out of hibernation, then
put it to sleep and bring it out of sleep, the problem goes away.

I can't find where I read it, but a quick workaround is to unplug and
replug the power cord after returning from hibernate. Works for me...
