Note entirely sure what the correct procedure is, but since the problem
appears to be gone in Hardy, I'm assuming "Fix Released" is appropriate.

I haven't been able to reproduce the volume problem after upgrading to
the Hardy beta (currently kernel 2.6.24-15-generic). So I assume this
should be closed.

I am unable to reproduce this issue on a 1420n, using Rhythmbox to play
ogg files. I suspend and hibernate while playing a song and after
pausing. After resuming, sound level is normal (same level as before
going into S3/S4) and does not go up. I've only tried a few times, so

It's not specific to rhythmbox. I also tried doing a suspend and resume
while playing mp3's with totem and with the "play" command. Both
triggered the problem.
Another interesting detail is that whenever the problem occurs there's
also a very soft digital "click" between 2 and 3 times a second,
The problem could be related to Rhythmbox, have you tried with a
different app? How about Totem? What if you play an mp3 file instead of
ogg?
I'm curious, what video card are you using? (not that it matters, I'm
just curious)

That's correct. Though actually, at least with rhythmbox, once I've
played a sound I actually have to quit rhythmbox to prevent the problem
occurring. So:
- If I've never played any sound, and I suspend/resume, no problem.
- If I start rhythmbox, don't play any sound, then suspend/resume, no p
So it seems that the problem only presents itself if Rhythmbox (or any
other app, for that matter) is playing sound when you invoke
suspend/hibernate? If you pause/stop sound, then the problem never
occurs?

Yo
I can confirm this problem in gutsy on a Dell 1420n using rhythmbox and
amarok. I also haven't been able to pinpoint what triggers this, but
also suspect an issue with suspend. This could possibly be related to
the bug filed at the Dell Linux Wiki
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/
"I haven't found any other way to stop the problem once it's started."
I take that back--a third suspend/resume, this time without anything
playing during the suspend, cleared the problem.
So the problem appears to occur if and only if I suspend and then resume
while a sound is playing.

Experimenting some more: this isn't specific to rhythmbox, but to all
sounds (e.g., the sounds gdm makes on login are also affected)
I verified that I can temporarily fix the problem by rebooting. I
haven't found any other way to stop the problem once it's started.
