I have the same problem but just using vpnc-connect and entering in my
school's vpn info it works. But if i try to use the network-manager-vpnc
connection it fails right away saying it couldn't connect. I don't know
if this is related but vpnc wouldn't work right away it said port 500
was in use an

i use Hardy and till recently network-manager-vpnc works great.
Yesterday i needed a connection to a CISCO Network and it works not any
more. I nothing changes on the configuration. Unfortunately, I do not
know since when it no longer works.

is a free VPN Client for the AVM Fritz! Box. After i uninstall them, the

0) uninstall vpnc & network-manager-vpnc via synaptic
1) download *source* package of 'vpnc' from feisty distro:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/net/vpnc (take all 3 files - .dsc,
.orig., .diff.)
2) install it:
$ dpkg-source -x vpnc_0.4.0-2ubuntu1.dsc
$ make && sudo make
[edit of previous post]
I've tried to use binary vpnc from feisty, and it works too! So, instead
of 1-4 do this:
1) download binaries from http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/net/vpnc &
http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/net/network-manager-vpnc
2) install them:
$ sudo dpkg -i vpnc_0.4.0-2ubuntu1_i

did to the policy files. However, if I purged and then re-installed the
packages, the problem returned:

Matthew, I see the issue, but dont see your patch.. tried renaming root,
to my current login.. tried default (and removing the deny after)..
reloading dbus each time.. couldnt get to work, what should i be
changing the policy to?

It works now for me, even without Matthews patch.
All I did was to delete all saved vpn passwords with seahorse, connect and
enter everything again and check all buttons on the save dialog.

manager-vpnc is correct. However, dbus just isn't seeing the new config
file initially.

i use Hardy and till recently network-manager-vpnc works great.
Yesterday i needed a connection to a CISCO Network and it works not any
more. I nothing changes on the configuration. Unfortunately, I do not
know since when it no longer works.

to my current login.. tried default (and removing the deny after)..
reloading dbus each time.. couldnt get to work, what should i be
changing the policy to?

I've tried to get Hardy's VPN stuff to work, but failed.
I've:
- unlocked versions in synaptic,
- purged old versions,
- installed new versions of network-manager-vpnc & vpnc,
- edited /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-vpnc-service.conf:

Sorry for the confusion I caused by posting my "patch" earlier. This was
completely bogus, so I removed it. The dbus config installed by network-
manager-vpnc is correct. However, dbus just isn't seeing the new config
file initially.
Re-reading this thread, it seems there may be a couple of bugs t
I am wondering if my username might be whats causing the issue.. its a
"first.last" variant. Maybe authentication is actually failing. ..

/etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-vpn-service.conf. In the policy installed by
