the Launchers category), then the issue isn't observable.
The difference lies in the way thunderbird is invoked. For the existing

I can confirm this using Ubuntu 18.04 but *only* when starting
Thunderbird from a keyboard shortcut. I tried using Super+T and Ctrl-
Alt-G. For me, the mouse pointer doesn't change to a spinner until
Thunderbird has loaded and is checking for new mail.

Yes, this happens every time on Unity. In fact, it's been happening for
many years. It's only now that I've got round to reporting it. I can
take a video on my phone if you like.
My keyboard shortcut is configured as:

I cannot observe the problem you describe. I've tested in a fully up-to-
date 19.10 VM, with both the default GNOME desktop, and in the Unity
session. In both cases, when starting thunderbird with a keyboard
shortcut, the cursor immediately turns into a spinner, and in the case
