On Hardy alpha5, nvidia-glx-new generally works and is easier than ever
to configure. However, I have to specify that the monitor on my
notebook is 1280x800 widescreen every time I log in, since Hardy always
boots into 1280x786 - my specified config is not stored.

have a look at your Xorg.0.log.old. Does it say something like '(EE)
Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
found)'. If so, try adding the nvidia module in /etc/modules.
It seems to me, like nvidia kernel module is missing every second or
third reboot some
Type:
sudo nvidia-settings
set the correct resolution and save your settings. This should make the
resolution permanent.
