Dbx updates don't apply through a UEFI capsule.
They're applied in OS. So the root cause of the problem is not related to
fwupd-efi.

If not yet confirmed, then I will like to confirm that I have probably
the same bug in comment #10. I update the firmware and everything seems
successful but when rebooting (immediately when prompted) the computer
boots immediately into the OS without actually updating the firmware.

To check if this is indeed the problem, run this command:
$ efibootmgr|grep Linux-Firmware-Updater
Correct result looks like this:

What eventually worked for me was:
1) clearing SecureBoot keys (putting SecureBoot into Setup mode)
2) booting into Ubuntu, running fwupdmgr update (of course nothing updated
since the UEFI DBX was removed).
3) Restore SecureBoot keys to factory defaults.
4) Run fwupdmgr update

I am also affected by this bug, running an Intel ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 with
a fairly (~1 month) old Ubuntu 24.04 install. The update pops up quite
often, even though I reboot immediately. SecureBoot is enabled, but no
FDE.

I don't see any problems here with what fwupd is doing. After you
reboot is the device not up to date?
