capnahab : Mmh, grub is what starts ubuntu and linux once your ubuntu
system is installed, however according to your description, it is not
your case yet since you are trying to install ubuntu. Perhaps that you

Hi Saivann,
Thanks for you encouragement and a friendly post. I am stuck at booting into
the boot menu because it doesn't seem to appear,- No grub menu. and I don't
know the key combo to make it. I know you are not really here to support this
basic lack of knowledge on my part but a pointer to w
capnahab : Thanks for your comment. Since you can still reproduce a
problem with the linux kernel, can you open a new bug report and
subscribe me (saivann) to it so I can assist you with finding more
informations about that specific issue? Let's say that for a relatively
inexperienced ubuntu user,
I am trying to install 8.04 to a system with a Asus A8N SLi premium
motherboard. The machine is running XP at the moment.
The install fails at initramfs, with a cycle trying to access the cd.
I have tried 8.04 (AMD64 and 386 )

Hi Robert,
Thanks for testing and the feedback. It seems this was resolved mainly
because of the BIOS update. I'm going to go ahead and mark this "Fix
Released". Others experiencing the same issue will still be able to
search and find this bug report and see that a BIOS update resolved the

I've just started running this Intrepid kernel (and all the broken

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I probably have the same issue. I have a fresh 64-bit Hardy install on a new HP
Pavilion with an Intel Quad Core and nVIDIA GeForce 9500.
When starting the computer, Ubuntu freezes shortly after the GRUB menu when the
splash screen comes up and the progress bar bounces to and fro. This happens

Robert Bernecky : Thanks for this information! Even if this bug is fixed
on your computer with updated BIOS, I won't close the bug since it can

BIOS is not completely updated. This bug might contains interesting

I upgraded the ASUS m/b BIOS per my comments in bug#227176, and
the problems went away. I consider this problem resolved, at least on my box.

I found that adding all_generic_ide to the /boot/grub/menu.lst stanza was an OK
workaround, but I do not know
if this affects performance, reliability, etc. Here's the change I made:

Robert Bernecky : Some bugs of this kind has been reported in the past
and I remember that some workarounds were to disable specific
functionalities in the BIOS, such as CPU Hyperthreading or other. Maybe
that you can find a workaround there.

Thank you!
I suspect some sort of race condition (perhaps related to multi-core?), since
the failures
are quite erratic. Failure at power-up is quite common. Failure during reboot
is more frequent
during soft reboot (logoff/shutdown/restart button) than during hard reboot

Thanks for this detailed report. Since it contains everything that the
kernel team needs in order to take a look at it, I assign the bug to the

there is further needed informations, developers will be able to ask for
