Cheers for the feedback, I will try that out. I also wanted to try this out in
KDE to see if it crashed then. I crashes with XFCE and GNOME.

I tested again with the Jaunty daily build LiveCD from 1/27/2009 and X
still crashes upon startup. Ubuntu falls back to low-graphics mode
with the following error:

Could you test it again with current Jaunty with all updates? We've
recently upgraded to the 2.6.1 -intel driver, along with new libdrm,
mesa, and xserver, any of which may have addressed this issue.

Could this problem be something to do with compiz? It seems like the
kind of bug compiz threw up until recently. How would I go about
disabling compiz completely from start up to test this theory?

I also get this problem. I have not yet tried to install it on my
system, I will try this later and I will post back with more
information. At the moment, after the splash screen I get a brown screen
with a mouse cursor, then I hear the Ubuntu drums, then the screen
blacks out leaving the cursor
This seems to be still happening with the latest Intrepid beta. I
believe that a program that starts during login crashes. I have yet to
determine which program and why it is crashing. This happens when
logging in through gdm as well as when starting X manually (startx).

can you please try the following? upon seeing grub's boot list, choose recovery
mode, and when given a list of options, choose to fix X server. or go to a
terminal and manually type:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and see if it works.
