If this is still a lingering issue, the grub team should review the
original debian bug. It looks like some patch code has been added into
the upstream bug report. If I read the accompanying explanation
correctly, this affects both grub and grub2. For now, this has been
indicated as peculiar to

grub 0.97-2 must have been a dapper or edgy version. (Perhaps an update
to dapper?) Based on packages.ubuntu.com, dapper uses 0.97-1, while
gutsy uses 0.97-29, and of course later releases use later versions of
grub. (Edgy and feisty are no longer supported)

Since grub upstream and Debian both seem to think that it's not a
problem, and this bug was only generated by the Debian importer, is
there any reason this should be kept open any longer?
