Ok, I think I may have found out what's causing the problem in my case. After booting, there is just one notify-osd process running. If I press volume increase/decrease keys, I get one notification, as expected. However, if I try to change the brightness using the brightness keyboard keys, another

Yes, I see two notification boxes/bubbles - one is themed (uses my custom theme), and one isn't(uses the default theme). I can tell this because the non-themed one takes about half second more to disappear than the themed one. It happens whenever I press the key-sequences to increase either

I then switched to another user (without logging out of the first account), and now notify-osd has two processes, one for each user and none for root. The notification is appearing correctly for screen brightness now (ie only one appears). So it does seem likely that the root process is causing

It's doing it again. What happens is I press the brightness adjust, and the normal notification window appears. Shortly afterwards (half a second or so?), the smaller window appears over the top of the normal window, and it fades away shortly after the normal window fades away. -- notify-osd

If it makes you feel better, it's not doing it any more after a suspend/resume cycle! Could it have been something to do with font sizes or screen DPI? After I applied the latest updates and rebooted, I seem to recall that all my font sizes had been reset to 13. instead of 10. Is it possible
