The problem has gone away. I didn't proceed scientifically, but here is
what I did, in the event it helps anyone with a similar issue:
Believing pulseaudio to be the culprit, I uninstalled it. Then the
laptop went into suspend properly, but wouldn't come out of it (screen
flickering, slightly
Could you check wether your X60 has really the same product-id? What
about trying a fresh karmic install with the live-usbstick? I have not
reinstalled my X60 but tried with the live-usbstick ...
Do you still have a xorg.conf? What about KMS?

(fresh install is not an option at the moment, timewise).
I have in the meantime confirmed that pulseadio is the culprit that
prevents the system from going into suspend mode: When I kill
pulseaudio, the notebook then enters
I experience the same problem: attempting to suspend and resume doesn't
work on a Lenovo X60t, not by closing the lid and not through the menu.
The following snip from pm-suspend.log seems to suggest that PulseAudio
may cause the problem:
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00powersave suspend suspend:
Could you try that with a karmic Live-CD. For me karmic solved a lot of
problems and I think it is a good idea to do a fresh install (if
possible). Compared to a X61 refernece system the X60 fails to support
the hardware audio keys (they are decoupled form the software mixer
sitting in the tray).
