Success. Theory proven. Did not need the reboot after activating the
driver. Worked like a charm. If you have a notebook with Broadcom
wireless card BCM4318, this appears to be the easiest solution by far.

took solved the problem. Since this is not helpful to anyone else with
the same card I am doing an entirely new fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04

Success. I gave up on Intrepid 8.10, installed Jaunty 9.04 and finally
got my Broadcom BCM4318 wireless card to work. I loaded NDISwrapper
through the Gnome add/remove application. I did several reboots and was
just familiarizing myself with Gnome packages, had finished running
computer janitor and
I spent hours and did some more research. I understand the nature of the
problem is proprietary drivers for the wifi card that are not written for
Linux, and there are three basic solutions (with many variant methods), but
none of them are specified as working with BCM4318. There is a Broadcom
