I am experiencing similar behavior to what ethanay reported.
Specifically, when I mute via the keyboard's mute button (pretty
standard Dell keyboard with a few media buttons on it), then wait a few
seconds or more before unmuting, the unmute is successful but the volume
has changed from its origin
This happens on my Thinkpad R61 as well. Here are some details:

Hi, could you please provide more information about your HW and sound
driver? I'm not able to reproduce your issue on my eee901 - perhaps it's
driver-specific issue...

Similar behavior on Dell XPS m1330 running 7.10 w/latest updates:
Here are some odd behaviors:
1) Muting volume w/the mute media key registers successfully. Waiting
at least ~ 3-5 seconds and unmuting *via the same media key* appears to
unmute but fails. unmuting via the panel app works as expec
this behavior also happens on my install of 8.04 w/ volume applet
2.21.92. any resolutions?
