Doris, I think we are a little bit closer to figuring out what is
happening. There is something that I would like for you to do to help
us see better what is going on. If you would, please do the following
steps:
1. Insert any CD into the computer
2. Open the program called Terminal (Can be
Doris, this was very useful information, and you did wonderfully. From
this information, I can see that your computer is trying to talk to the
CD player, but isn't quite doing it correctly. This is definitely a
bug.
What I would like to try next is to get your computer fully-up-to-date.

Note to udev people: I am still triaging this. I might be slightly wrong on
which package i am assigning it to. I know this report is very long, but the
important information is in the dmesg file in reply #16:

Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item Unknown
which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
CD's. Help! I don't know what to do, if not that?
Ok, I am fairly convinced that this isn't a problem with rhythmbox as
much as it is a problem with Ubuntu not recognizing the insertion of the
CD. Just to test, could you find a non-music CD or DVD and insert that
into the drive to see if Ubuntu does anything?

Forgive my lack of clarity when I said non-music CD, I meant non-
audio CD. Like a CD for a program, or data backups, or pictures. It is
interesting that a DVD didn't work either. What is the make/model of

As for the USB thumb drive, it will work with Linux. There are two

Doris, thank you for the laugh. You are taking all of this in very
graceful strides.
Yes this does help me a bit. It tells me that certain parts of Ubuntu
are working properly, and narrows down the list of possible sources of
problems.
As for the thumb drive, you are absolutely correct that

Doris,
Thank you for taking the time to report a bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. I see that you described what you expect happened in good
detail, but I don't see a description of what currently happens besides
that the Unknown label no longer appears.
It would be helpful for you to
