Doris, thank you for the laugh. You are taking all of this in very
graceful strides.

Yes this does help me a bit. It tells me that certain parts of Ubuntu
are working properly, and narrows down the list of possible sources of
problems.

As for the thumb drive, you are absolutely correct that you don't want
to remove the thumb drive without "Ejecting" or "Unmounting" the device.
This process makes sure that there are no files still open and keeps
your files safe. On your desktop, you should see an icon with the name
of the drive (in this case, "3BF8-0A57"). If you right-click that icon
with your mouse, you should see a list of choices drop down. At/near
the bottom of that list, you should see "Eject" (maybe "Unmount", maybe
both).

Click on "Eject" and the icon should disappear if it happened
successfully. At that point, it is safe to remove the thumb drive. If
a message comes up saying that it could not eject, then that means that
there is still something holding a file open on the device, and it has
to be closed and the process repeated. In rare cases, it is possible
that the computer can not seem to eject the device, then just wait until
you shut the computer down normally, and then you can remove the thumb
drive when the computer is off.

As for the "Mystery slot", I am guessing that it is your 3 1/4 inch
floppy drive. These disks are rarely used anymore as they could only
hold a tiny amount of data compared to CDs and thumb drives.

As for your original complaint about the CDs not registering, I am going
to do a little checking to see what the problem is and get back to you
tomorrow.

Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item "Unknown"
which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
CD's. Help! I don't know what to do, if not that?
