Doris, let's take this one item at a time...

Don't worry about another type of CD. We can figure stuff out in other
ways.

As for the USB thumb drive, it will work with Linux. There are two
common reasons why the thumb drive did not insert into the port. The
most common is that it is upside-down. Hold the thumb drive like you
would a playing card, and imagine that you are looking at the face of
the card. Try to then insert the drive into the USB port. If it
doesn't seem to fit, flip the thumb drive in the same way you would if
you wanted to see the back of the playing card, and try to insert it
again. The other common mistake is confusing the similar USB port and
the Firewire port.

The following image can help:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2002/591/usb_firewire.jpg
There are 4 usb ports in a group, and then a firewire port (angled vertically)
next to those 4 usb ports.

Let me know if you are able to successfully insert the device, and if
the computer took any actions.

Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item "Unknown"
which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
CD's. Help! I don't know what to do, if not that?
