I used this app (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/gsynaptics) to avoid the problem.. After having manually set "SHMConfig" "true" in my xorg.conf, gsynaptics started and allowed me modifying tapping interval for my Dell Vostro 1500.. I think this is the best workaround we can have.. -- synaptic
