i was having this very same issue with an intel ICH9 soundcard. i also tried openSUSE 11.2 and fedora 12 and the bug was there as well (at least in the Live CDs), so it doesn't seem to be Ubuntu specific. with Ubuntu 9.04 (LiveCD) everything seemed fine. i found a partial workaround by following
