So, looking at the source code, the SSID already has a model=dell quirk by
default. If we were to change this, I want to be as certain as possible that
we're not fixing one thing and causing another. For example, it seems like the
toshiba model has a line-in whereas the dell model hasn't.

Clay, thanks for your help. I can confirm that this issue is definitely gone.

yeah no problem, op said he was on a mini9, and so am i, here is the
alsa info you wanted. the post i found was from mid august, so i found
it recently. i cant believe a simple fix like that went undetected,
also, the other fixes were *so* tricky, at least for newbs like myself,
and yet didnt work,
Clay, thanks for looking this up! Could you also attach an Alsa-Info to
this bug ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo ) to ensure you're
having the same hardware as the original poster? Thanks!

Hi all,
Yesterday while researching gentoo I can across a page on the MIni 9. It is
an overview of the settings required for installing gentoo on the Mini 9 and
it states "The Inspiron Mini's mixer configuration is actually the "toshiba"
configuration, not the "dell" configuration."

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and have the same problem. I've added the asus-
model option to the end of my file, but it doesn't make any difference.
Could you please elaborate on exactly what you did?

I’m having the same problem using 9.10 or the new 10.04 on an Acer
Aspire One and both versions cause the same hiss problem when headphones
are connected.
I followed the links posted by mastervivi and the information led me to
a fix for the problem.
The chipset of course is revealed by the head -

i do have linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic installed (actually,
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic-pae).
when i was experimenting with all the various models, for some of them i did
reboot, for others i only did
sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=MODEL
@mastervivi
Did you remove the model quirk, install
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic, and reboot?

i was having this very same issue with an intel ICH9 soundcard.
i also tried openSUSE 11.2 and fedora 12 and the bug was there as well (at
least in the Live CDs), so it doesn't seem to be Ubuntu specific. with Ubuntu
9.04 (LiveCD) everything seemed fine.

I forgot to say this issue seems to be present even of a 9.04 with custom

I can't reproduce it because I completely removed Ubuntu 9.04 now. Need space
