The bug is fixed for me in natty because of :

I doubt it, after beta, hardly anything gets in, even though it looks
promising. :)
I did the following to download the firmware:
- Unplugged my usb stick (TP-LINK TL-WN821N)
- Executed:
cd /lib/firmware/
sudo wget

This is a showstopper bug for a very popular chipset. If there's a new
version of the driver I REALLY hope it goes into Maverick. Right now
it's nearly unbearable and as much as I'm loving the 10.10 kubuntu it
makes it difficult to use an internet connected device that can't
connect to a network.
I see that a new driver has been released for this chipset:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170
I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but the changelog suggests many
features have been added and bugs fixed (including fatal errors).
Hopefully if it resolves the issues with ar9170u

Agreed, it's not just a NetworkManager issue. I'm trialling ngc2997's
suggested patched NetworkManager from volanin's PPA, with background
scans off, and still experiencing the same freezing issues during large
data transfers (?maybe less frequently, hard to tell for sure).
Notably, I see http://w

I don't think so - note this is not a NetworkManager issue, but one of
the driver (ar9170usb). NetworkManager just "triggers" it by
periodically scanning for other APs, but that's a feature, not a bug.

True, other devices are affected, most of them are listed here:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170#available_devices
> This somehow seems to be related to periodic scannin
This somehow seems to be related to periodic scanning for other APs in
range (e.g., NetworkManager does this). When configured manually using
wpa_supplicant, I found the connection to be stable, unless I ran iwlist
scan commands periodically - doing so reproducibly kills the connection
after a rand

Atheros is aware of this problem, but so far: no fix.
Also AR9170 is being replaced by AR9271
It's a little better with Linux version 2.6.32-17-generic-pae kernel.
It loses connection in an hour instead of a few minutes. No intensive package
losing any more. However the latency of ip packages are large, but the
bandwidth is OK. Like a Hsdpa mobile internet connection. I need more testing
