This was fixed a few weeks ago, with the upload of nvidia binary drivers
compatible with X.Org 7.1.
Please feel free to reopen the bug if the bug still exists on a full up-
to-date Edgy system.

I'm not using the nvidia driver and I've experienced this problem (I'm
using the radeon driver). The previous decision that it was a freetype
rendering bug seemed correct to me.

When I was getting this bug I was, but enabling sub pixel hinting fixed
it before I switched to nv.

Most websites in firefox 1.99+2.0b1+dfsg-1ubuntu3 are also affected by this

Same here in gaim and gimp. Both those things were already checked, but
it seems anti-aliasing was not enabled anyways (at least for GTK apps,
everything works fine in all my apps other than gaim and gimp).

For people who are using KDE and have bad/disappearing fonts in certain
GTK applications such as Gaim, Gnucash, and GIMP, here's a workaround:
In KDE's Control Center, Appearance & Themes, Fonts, Anti-Aliasing, make
sure that "Use sub-pixel hinting" is checked.
