I wonder if my problem could have to do with different USB ports?
When I first plug in the modem (syslog_1), the GSM modem first claims
ttyUSB0 and then ttyUSB2. When I try to connect (syslog_2) modem-manager
tries to open ttyUSB0 and gets no carrier.

I too get the 3g modem showing up as a data storage device, but if you
go to network manager and edit the mobile broadband gui with your apn
and number (mine is *99#), it should connect on the latest kernel. It
also worked with usb-modesitch, but with that, you also have to edit the
broadband gui.

I'm surprised to see that the E620 is working for both of you. I cannot
get a connection with it. I've tried on two computers, one with 9.10 and
one with 10.04.
On the machine with 10.04, I have kernel 2.6.32-22-generic, and I also
installed usb-modeswitch_1.1.2-2 and usb-modeswitch-data_20100418-
Kernel 2.6.32-22-generic connected the Huawei 3g modem upon boot - I
guess this is solved. No need to continue running the mainstream
'development' kernel!

You are right electhor, thank you for the tip.
I installed 2.6.34-999-generic #201005011008 SMP and the Huawei E620 USB Modem
is working for hours now without problem. I removed it and switched it back in
a number of times and every time it did connect properly.

Christian,
Mine will no longer connect at all with kernel2.6.32-21-generic (except for
those few short hours) - I have therefore had to stick with the mainline kernel
which so far, has connected faultlessly.

Have done more testing, that explains the delay.
It looks like the E620 modem connects if it is plugged in at boot time. It
behaves erratically if plugged in after the system has booted without it being
plugged in before the boot.
I upgraded my test laptop with the official 10.04 LTS (2.6.32-21-g
Christian, so far the mainline kernel 2.6.34-999 generic has connected
the E620, at every boot. I think it would be useful for you to try this
kernel too - Jeremy has put a link further up the page. Hopefully the
developers can see what is in the kernel I am now using and what
deficiencies are in t
I made various tests this is what I can state:

Well, not 100% fixed. Electhor is right, when I rebooted this mornig it wasn't
working any longer. At least not on my production laptop, the test laptop still
worked first time.
I got it working again but did too many changes to be sure which one was the
right one. I re-installed modemmanager. I

i am glad that you are fixed.

Christian, I am glad your two computers are now working with the Huawei
E620, as mine no longer is. When it started working, I rebooted a few
times, left it off for an hour and rebooted and the E620 connected upon
boot each time, this was while I was at work. Upon arriving home, the
E620 was no lon

Found the culprit!
On my second machine modemmanager (D-Bus service for managing modems) was
missing. Installed with Synaptic and it now works. I have no idea why
modemmanager was not installed on this machine. Anything to do with Betavine? I
don't know.
To summarize: Huawei E620 USB Modem does
Thank you.
Interesting enough, update manager does the job of solving the problem for one
of my laptops:
Compaq Evo N800c (old test machine).
Was on 2.6.31-20-generic #58 version with the problem.
I did run Update manager first to make sure it is up-to-date (requires restart).
Result was an upgrad
I too am very glad that it is working.
Christian, you could try the two .deb packages mentioned above. One
needs to be installed before the other, otherwise there is a dependency

that, install the other package and then the s

Revised my position on this - the huawei E620 is now working on RC release
(with full updates). Can't understand this as it originally was not recognised
by newtwork manager. I have removed the two .deb packages mentioned above and
now the 3g modem is working without the usb-modeswitch packages.
Ok, the apport code wants to connect to launchpad when it's run. This of
course is not possible when the 3g modem won't work without the two
above packages. Need a code that saves output to .txt - then I can send
it once I reinstall the usb_modeswitch packages. Anyway, I will
uninstall those again
Can confirm this doesn't work the rc version of ubuntu with kernel
2.6.32-21-generic - it however does work if these two packages are installed.
usb-modeswitch-data_20100127-1_all.deb
usb-modeswitch_1.1.0-2_i386.deb
I will uninstall those and do the apport-collect code and then try the

Just installed 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu and my ID 12d1:1001 Huawei
Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem stopped working. Everything was working
fine with 9.04. An old htc TyTN II USB connected saves my life until a fix is
available.
Same on 2 computers: Compaq Evo N800c and hp EliteBook 853
Latest download a 10.04 Beta 2 - Huawei E620 usb modem still does not
work and network manager does not recognise the usb modem at all, even
after editing network manager and adding the device. I have only tried
this off the live cd, but it works off the live cd in 9,04, so should
with 10.04 too.
Oh yes, kernel versions.
As the OSes aren't installed any longer, I can't uname -a them to find out, but
they were both updated with the latest kernel for the respective version -
lucid kernel, I think was, 2.6.32-16-generic and at the time the karmic kernel
was 2.6.31-20-generic (I think). Hop
